Separable Banach Space Theory Needs Strong Set Existence Axioms

چکیده
We investigate the strength of set existence axioms needed for separable Banach space theory. We show that a very strong axiom, Π1 comprehension, is needed to prove such basic facts as the existence of the weak-∗ closure of any norm-closed subspace of `1 = c0. This is in contrast to earlier work [6, 4, 7, 23, 22] in which theorems of separable Banach space theory were proved in very weak subsystems of second order arithmetic, subsystems which are conservative over Primitive Recursive Arithmetic for Π2 sentences. En route to our main results, we prove the Krein-Šmulian theorem in ACA0, and we give a new, elementary proof of a result of McGehee on weak-∗ sequential closure ordinals.

Separation and Weak König's Lemma
We continue the work of [14, 3, 1, 19, 16, 4, 12, 11, 20] investigating the strength of set existence axioms needed for separable Banach space theory. We show that the separation theorem for open convex sets is equivalent to WKL0 over RCA0. We show that the separation theorem for separably closed convex sets is equivalent to ACA0 over RCA0. Our strategy for proving these geometrical Hahn–Banach...
متن کامل$L^p$-existence of mild solutions of fractional differential equations in Banach space
We study the existence of mild solutions for semilinear fractional differential equations with nonlocal initial conditions in $L^p([0,1],E)$, where $E$ is a separable Banach space. The main ingredients used in the proof of our results are measure of noncompactness, Darbo and Schauder fixed point theorems. Finally, an application is proved to illustrate the results of this work.
متن کاملMetric Baumgartner Theorems and Universality
It is consistent with the axioms of set theory that for every metric space X which is isometric to some separable Banach space or to Urysohn’s universal separable metric space U the following holds: (?)X There exists a nowhere meager subspace of X of cardinality א1 and any two nowhere meager subsets of X of cardinality א1 are almost isometric to each other. As a corollary, it is consistent that...
متن کاملOrdered groups: a case study in reverse mathematics
The fundamental question in reverse mathematics is to determine which set existence axioms are required to prove particular theorems of mathematics. In addition to being interesting in their own right, answers to this question have consequences in both effective mathematics and the foundations of mathematics. Before discussing these consequences, we need to be more specific about the motivating...
متن کاملOn Bases in Banach Spaces
We investigate various kinds of bases in infinite dimensional Banach spaces. In particular, we consider the complexity of Hamel bases in separable and non-separable Banach spaces and show that in a separable Banach space a Hamel basis cannot be analytic, whereas there are non-separable Hilbert spaces which have a discrete and closed Hamel basis. Further we investigate the existence of certain c...
